2021.10.27 13:47 jthavorn Cousin drives down family business

Long but please bare with me: Over the summer I worked at my family’s restaurant. My older cousin ran the register, took take out orders and worked the business phone while I took orders and brought out food to the dine in diners.
My cousin was constantly on his phone, either calling a business’ customer service hotline to complain that his online order was messed up or asking about things not related to the business (example, prices for hotel rooms, prices for different items from a clothing store, etc). Customers would get mad cause they’d try to ask him questions about our menu but he’d either tell them to wait or answer very quickly while going back to whatever personal phone call he was in.
“Hey how much is that drink?” A customer would ask. My cousin would simply point to the prices on the same page.
“Does it come in a large?” they ask.
“No.” my cousin would answer while going right back to his phone call. “Yeah so how much of a deposit would I need to place today to reserve that hotel and spa treatment?”
Some customers wouldn’t put up with it and either simply turn around and walk out or tell him to get off his phone, which he never did.
“Just for that, I’m gonna take care of you last.” my cousin once told a customer for telling him to get off his phone.
My aunt and uncle own the restaurant and seem too timid to fire their own son. I fear that they’ll go out of business due to business getting slow due to my cousins constant slacking and distractions. I don’t work there anymore but any advice on what I could do to help or ways to tell him he needs to focus on work? Thanks in advance.

2021.10.27 13:47 john_rage "How Do I Find Work?"

This seems to be a common question I've seen pop up here recently, so I thought I'd share my advice as a composer who worked solely on commission for over a decade. These are in no particular order however some do probably need to happen before the others, particularly the notes about when you're in school.
Do's:

  1. If you're in a music school, make friends with the performers there. If they're into new music, or simply like what you're doing, then they'll be your best allies and champions of your work. In turn, you can help them by connecting them with other musicians you know! Reciprocity goes a long, long way. Doubly so when you're out of school and your performer friends start getting jobs with major ensembles!
  2. While in music school talk to the professors who run ensembles, and get to know what they're into and what kind of pieces they like to program. A lot of conservatories with composition programs have new music ensembles, and will often work with student composers and perform their works. This will tie into 1 if you're friends with the musicians in the new music ensemble.
  3. While in music school, start building a portfolio of your best works, and put them online. If you get pieces recorded while at school, put those recordings online (after getting permission from the performers!). Build a website with recordings and score samples. You'll need a central place to direct folks who are interested in you and your work.
  4. While in school and after you graduate: go to as many new music concerts as you can. Meet the musicians and the directors. Get to know them, what they like to play, and be supportive of their work! This is probably one of the most important things you can do for yourself as a composer! As you build your network, you can create an email list where you share newly completed works with them. Sharing works, rather than asking to collaborate (at first), is a good way to get your network familiarized with what you're writing and doing, and if they like what you're doing then they'll remember you next time you share something with them. After a you've built a relationship with them, then you can start pitching pieces or collaboration ideas to them.
  5. Send as many works as you can to score calls, especially ones with actual live recordings! This is a good way to get your work in front of people out of your area that you can't go meet directly. One caveat: DONT APPLY TO SCORE CALLS OR COMPETITIONS WITH AN ENTRY FEE. I realize this might limit a lot your options, but a lot of orgs use entry fees to fund the prizes, and its a really shitty practice that needs to stop. You'll end up spending hundreds of dollars and may not see anything come of it.
Dont's:
  1. Don't sit around and expect your shining genius to be automatically recognized simply because you're putting your work online. Unrecognized genius is practically a cliche. I've seen this happen so many times, even on this sub. Everyone and their mom puts their stuff online, and the amount of noise out there from the sheer volume of voices screaming to be heard will likely drown yours out. This sounds harsh and even pessimistic, but a lot of young composers seem to simply put their stuff out there and wonder why nothing else is happening - this is why! (Also, I recognize this might contradict point 3 from the do's, but point 3 is only part of everything else listed there you should be doing. Don't only do no 3!)
  2. Don't cold call/email folks looking to collaborate that you haven't met. It takes a lot of time, energy, and money to commission, rehearse, and perform a piece, and folks tend to be a lot more reluctant to take on all that work from a composer that they don't have an established rapport with.
  3. Don't shit talk your colleagues. They might be able to connect you with other orgs. Play nice and others might help you out.
The biggest takeaway I want to stress here is that it takes a lot of time, energy, and dedication to build your network. But it will be insanely worth it if you can follow through! There is nothing more fun than writing weird, wild experimental music with your friends who are enthusiastic about your work! Performers and ensemble directors will be your biggest allies and champions of your work, and if you want them to help you then you need to be there and support them as well.
tl;dr - You gotta show up for your musical community if you want them to show up for you!
One other note:
A composer doesn't just compose these days; they're also their own agent, publicist, editor, publisher, fundraiser, event organizer, and social media manager. Being a composer these days is essentially running a small business, and you need to be prepared to handle as many aspects of that as you can after building your network. There's tons of resources out there on grant writing and marketing that could go a long way with helping you make yourself more marketable as a composer.

2021.10.27 13:47 Minecraft_Is_Ok How to add a delay to a "run_command"?

How can I add a delay to my command /stopsound my.sound @a
For context- in my addon I made a Disco Ball. When you hit it, it turns on, animates, and plays crazy frog. I want to be able to turn the Disco Ball off after the song plays, but I can't figure out how to add a delay to a command?
This is the full block component code:

"run_command" { "command": "/stopsound my.sound @a" }
What are my options regarding scheduling or adding a tick delay using the API?
